Chapter 6

Kitchen Nightmares

I parked my bike in the garage and strolled into the house. Mom was in the kitchen preparing some stir fry for dinner.

“Hey, Mom?” I said, sitting down at the dinner table.

“Yes, Hugh?” she spoke, sitting down across from me with a weary expression.

“Well… Today I met this girl…” Mom groaned and palmed her face.

“Who is it, Hugh?” said my mother in a displeased tone.

“Her name’s Maia, and s-she’s a really great person…”

At this point I was quivering in my figurative boots. Why had I ever decided to introduce Maia to Mom? This was going horribly!

But before I had the chance to say any other stupid things, I saw something that made my blood freeze in my veins. Swirling around the oven was a cloud of dark, black vapour.

My heart was beating like a drum as the Howler took form for the third time. It stepped towards me, while Mom didn’t seem to notice it at all.

“Mom…?” I said, frozen in fear.

The Howler gave the most disgusting laugh.

“What is it, Hugh?” She seemed completely oblivious to the horrifying creature standing behind her.

I hastily said, “Look behind you!”

She turned around, but before she could see the Howler, it had completely evaporated.

She sighed. “Hugh, I don’t have time for this. If you want to talk to me about something, don’t waste me time.”

Hearing this, I decided that the conversation was over. I said a quick goodbye and rushed up to my room in a mix of embarrassment and horrible, bone-chilling fear.
